Take a guided tour of the farm and learn about their sustainable methods for improving soil health\, enhancing biodiversity\, and raising livestock regeneratively. \nHighlights include: \n\nA walkthrough of pasture management techniques that improve ecosystem function.\nAn overview of animal husbandry practices that focus on ethical\, regenerative grazing.\nInsights into how these approaches contribute to healthier soil\, animals\, and food systems.\n\nWhether you’re a farmer\, homesteader\, or someone interested in regenerative agriculture\, this field day will provide valuable knowledge and inspiration. \nWhen: October 3rd\, 1-3 PM \nWhere: 270 Caron Road\, Timmins\, Ontario \nRegister HERE \nAbout the hosts \nHawk Feather Farm was established in 2008 by John and Lois Caron\, who started their first organic market garden on a 1/4-acre plot of their 65-acre property. They introduced non-certified organic vegetables at the Mountjoy Farmer’s Market\, catering to consumers seeking healthier alternatives to conventionally grown produce. Within three years\, they expanded to one acre of irrigated vegetables and two acres of organic potatoes. In 2011\, they launched the first CSA in Timmins\, supplying 65 members with fresh produce until 2014. During this time\, they also began raising organic\, pastured chickens and pork. By 2014\, Hawk Feather Farm transitioned from vegetable production to focus on their dream of raising grass-fed beef through holistic land management\, or regenerative farming\, utilizing most of their 65 acres. Starting with five cows and a bull\, they expanded their herd to 60 cattle by 2016\, grazing on 150 acres\, including rented land. They continue to maintain 100% local farm gate sales. At Hawk Feather Farm\, perennial grasses are transformed into high-quality protein and fat by cattle raised on untreated pastures. Their regenerative farming practices mimic the natural behavior of wild herbivores through rotational grazing\, promoting soil\, animal\, and human health without synthetic fertilizers\, insecticides\, or pesticides. \nPreparation \nPlease come prepared for any weather (cool and wet or hot and sunny)\, and wear proper footwear appropriate for muddy and uneven terrain. \nThis field day is supported by funding from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario.

You will also get a chance to check out some of the tools they use as regenerative farmers\, including a demonstration of how electric bikes can be used as a climate-friendly tool in moving livestock across acreage. \nCora and Mike will give an overview of the grass fed market\, grass fed genetics\, pasture forages\, grazing plans\, fencing and water supply\, as well as logistics and timing of rotating the different groups of livestock through the paddocks. EFAO’s first province-wide in-person conference since 2019! \nRotational Grazing KSEs\nTools for Managing Pasture Using Nature’s Model for Ecological Sustainability \nNovember 29th\, 1:30-3:00pm \nHow do you know if your pasture is sustainable? Well\, is your sward readily grazed by stock and does it remain robust throughout the season? If you wondered if there was a typo or were tempted to google “sward\,” then you might learn something new in this session! E. Ann Clark suggests managing pasture in such a way as to offer “cheap feed” to animals\, meaning that she recommends diverse plantings of perennials that do not require mechanized maintenance. Ann sees the task of a grazier to be both identifying and implementing principles that sustain nature in food production and environmental management via grass-based farming. Sward genetics\, fertility\, and defoliation will all be discussed in this practical session for graziers. \nCover Cropping KSEs\nNitrogen Calculations for Cover Crops  \nNovember 29th\, 3:30-5:00pm \nJesse Way operates Milky Way Farm with his partner Meghan Brandenburg\, where they use cover crops as part of their management of 1.5 acres of ecologically-focused veg production. Jesse and Meghan conducted a research trial (as part of EFAO’s farmer-led-research program) to better understand how cover cropping was impacting their soil health. This trial was designed to investigate tools available to all farmers for addressing the challenge of predicting the Plant Available Nitrogen (PAN) contribution of organic amendments and cover crops in agroecosystems. At this session Jesse will go into detail about how to do biomass sampling from the field\, and how to make sense of the lab results using the free online calculator from Oregon State University. He will work through an example of predicting PAN\, and highlight the potential to reduce reliance on lab testing as a result of creating an on-farm database with potential for collaboration with other farms. \nNo-Till Potatoes: A Farmer Researcher Panel \nNovember 30th\, 10:30am-12:00pm \nNo-till production practices for potatoes might sound like an oxymoron for this hilling-intensive crop. Or is it? Join EFAO members and farmer-researchers Matt Jones\, Patti Charbaneau\, Rob Read\, and Ken Laing as they describe the methods they are trialing and the varieties they are working with to make organic no-till potato production a reality in Ontario. Some of these promising methods include use of spoiled hay\, woodchips\, compost\, and planting directly into a cover crop. \nGrowing Small Grains in Ontario: A speaker panel (part 2) \n\nNovember  29th\, 3:30-5:00pm\n\nPart 2 of this 2-part speaker panel focuses on an agronomy deep dive. Gather in this session to hear from farmers that have been learning in the literal field of growing small grains. We’ll get into the nitty gritty agronomic decisions that go into growing high-quality grains using ecological methods. We’ll talk about tillage\, timing\, fertility\, crop protection and all the tools an ecological farmer can use to get the most out of their small grains crops. We’ll also discuss mentorship in the grain growing community: who can we learn from\, and how? This farmer panel is made up of folks who have different ways of sourcing seed\, growing crops\, and marketing products with one thing in common: a passion for growing grain in a way that benefits the environment and their farms. DESCRIPTION:This full-day field day will include a tour of Meeting Place Organic Farm\, a multigenerational farm in Lucknow Ontario\, including cattle\, pigs\, horses and poultry on pasture using portable electric fencing and poultry hutches. The discussion will focus on how rotational grazing works and how you can integrate these methods into your own farm plans. Pasture charts will be available with a discussion of how to use them to keep track of your pasture activities during the grazing season.
