SUMMARY:Practical and Productive Vegetable Crop Rotations (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Practical and Productive Vegetable Crop Rotations\n\n \n\n\nTuesday April 14 @ 1:00 pm – 2:15 pm  Online via Zoom – link will be sent to registrants\n\n\n\n\nDesigning an effective crop rotation is one of the most important – and challenging – parts of managing a diversified vegetable farm. Join us for an informal\, practical meet-up and discussion focused on how three ecological vegetable farms approach crop rotation planning and how they include and highlight cover crops to benefit their farms. \nThis session will feature short presentations from three experienced vegetable farmers – Jeff Boesch\, Stephanie Laing and Reid Allaway – who will each share how they design and manage rotations on their farms. They’ll discuss the goals that guide their planning (such as soil health\, pest and disease management\, labor efficiency\, and crop productivity)\, processes they use to build and adapt their rotations over time\, and share about some of the challenges in their current processes. \nFarmers will share how they integrate cover crops into their rotations\, including where and when they fit them into tight production schedules\, what species they rely on\, and how cover crops support soil fertility and long-term resilience on their farms. \nAfter the presentations\, we’ll open the conversation for a casual discussion among participants. This will be a chance to ask questions\, compare approaches\, and learn from each other. \nWhether you’re refining an existing rotation or building one from scratch\, this interactive session will offer practical ideas\, examples from working farms\, and space for meaningful knowledge sharing and exchange. \nThis event is offered in partnership with the Farmers for Climate Solutions’ Farm Resilience Mentorship Program (FaRM). \n\nJoin to learn more about creative ways to bring cover crops into your operation. For more information and to register\, CLICK HERE. \n*This event is recognized as OSCIA OFCAF KSE under BMP category Cover Cropping \n

SUMMARY:Stories of Innovation at Ferme Houle Farm
DESCRIPTION:All Indigenous growers\, land stewards and community members are welcome to attend this field day free of charge! Please use the coupon code BOOT2025 when filling out the registration form to receive free admission. \nAndre Houle of Ferme Houle Farm isn’t scared to try something new. Andre and his family are third and fourth generation farmers on this land\, and transitioned it to organic in 2021\, after many years of more conventional farming. \nWithin a few years of this transition\, they went from a corn/soybean rotation and plowing every inch of soil\, to growing wheat\, rye\, barley\, peas\, hairy vetch\, red clover\, buckwheat\, oats\, and fava beans along with corn and soybeans. They intercrop many of these crops in an effort to feed the soil biology\, and use cover crops to keep the soil covered as much as we can. They are using roller-crimping techniques\, no-till\, minimal tillage and plowing only when necessary. \nThis year\, in an effort to continue to experiment and innovate\, Andre and his team have embarked on some soil health trials on the farm. \nJoin us at this field day for a field tour and discussion of the Ferme Houle Farm story\, a look at their cover cropping methods and processes\, a drone demonstration and an exploration and discussion of some of these on-farm trials: \n1. Intercropping: Barley and Peas\, Fall Rye and Hairy Vetch\, Fall Rye\, Hairy Vetch and Oats\, Oats and Clover\, Corn and Soybeans \n2. Polycropping: Small sections of multiple crops to see what we can harvest together – Peas\, Faba beans\, Wheat\, Barley\, Oats\, Flax\, Phacaelia\, Rye\, Hairy vetch \n3. No-till Soybeans: Baling fall rye for the cows and no-till seeding soybeans in the stubble \n4. No-till Buckwheat: Harvesting Fall Rye and no-tilling Buckwheat 5. Wheat and Oat Breeding: Participatory Plant Breeding (PPB) program—a collaboration between the University of Manitoba and the Bauta Initiative (a program of SeedChange) that supports farmers in developing wheat\, oat\, and potato varieties for organic and ecological farming. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen? Wednesday\, August 13 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere? Ferme Houle Farm\, 2300 County Road #2 Curran\, Ontario K0B 1C0 \nCost? SUMMARY:Regenerative Grazing Field Day at Hawk Feather Farm
DESCRIPTION:Join the Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario (EFAO) for an insightful afternoon at Hawk Feather Farm\, where we’ll explore their regenerative approach to grass-fed beef and pork production. Take a guided tour of the farm and learn about their sustainable methods for improving soil health\, enhancing biodiversity\, and raising livestock regeneratively. \nHighlights include: \n\nA walkthrough of pasture management techniques that improve ecosystem function.\nAn overview of animal husbandry practices that focus on ethical\, regenerative grazing.\nInsights into how these approaches contribute to healthier soil\, animals\, and food systems.\n\nWhether you’re a farmer\, homesteader\, or someone interested in regenerative agriculture\, this field day will provide valuable knowledge and inspiration. \nWhen: October 3rd\, 1-3 PM \nWhere: 270 Caron Road\, Timmins\, Ontario \nRegister HERE \nAbout the hosts \nHawk Feather Farm was established in 2008 by John and Lois Caron\, who started their first organic market garden on a 1/4-acre plot of their 65-acre property. They introduced non-certified organic vegetables at the Mountjoy Farmer’s Market\, catering to consumers seeking healthier alternatives to conventionally grown produce. Within three years\, they expanded to one acre of irrigated vegetables and two acres of organic potatoes. In 2011\, they launched the first CSA in Timmins\, supplying 65 members with fresh produce until 2014. During this time\, they also began raising organic\, pastured chickens and pork. By 2014\, Hawk Feather Farm transitioned from vegetable production to focus on their dream of raising grass-fed beef through holistic land management\, or regenerative farming\, utilizing most of their 65 acres. Starting with five cows and a bull\, they expanded their herd to 60 cattle by 2016\, grazing on 150 acres\, including rented land. They continue to maintain 100% local farm gate sales. At Hawk Feather Farm\, perennial grasses are transformed into high-quality protein and fat by cattle raised on untreated pastures. Their regenerative farming practices mimic the natural behavior of wild herbivores through rotational grazing\, promoting soil\, animal\, and human health without synthetic fertilizers\, insecticides\, or pesticides. \nPreparation \nPlease come prepared for any weather (cool and wet or hot and sunny)\, and wear proper footwear appropriate for muddy and uneven terrain. \nThis field day is supported by funding from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Northern Ontario.

SUMMARY:EFAO Conference
DESCRIPTION:The annual EFAO Conference draws farmers and supporters from across the food system for two days of intensive learning\, idea-sharing\, networking and celebration with good food and friends. EFAO’s first province-wide in-person conference since 2019! \nRotational Grazing KSEs\nTools for Managing Pasture Using Nature’s Model for Ecological Sustainability \nNovember 29th\, 1:30-3:00pm \nHow do you know if your pasture is sustainable? Well\, is your sward readily grazed by stock and does it remain robust throughout the season? If you wondered if there was a typo or were tempted to google “sward\,” then you might learn something new in this session! E. Ann Clark suggests managing pasture in such a way as to offer “cheap feed” to animals\, meaning that she recommends diverse plantings of perennials that do not require mechanized maintenance. Ann sees the task of a grazier to be both identifying and implementing principles that sustain nature in food production and environmental management via grass-based farming. Sward genetics\, fertility\, and defoliation will all be discussed in this practical session for graziers. \nCover Cropping KSEs\nNitrogen Calculations for Cover Crops  \nNovember 29th\, 3:30-5:00pm \nJesse Way operates Milky Way Farm with his partner Meghan Brandenburg\, where they use cover crops as part of their management of 1.5 acres of ecologically-focused veg production. Jesse and Meghan conducted a research trial (as part of EFAO’s farmer-led-research program) to better understand how cover cropping was impacting their soil health. This trial was designed to investigate tools available to all farmers for addressing the challenge of predicting the Plant Available Nitrogen (PAN) contribution of organic amendments and cover crops in agroecosystems. At this session Jesse will go into detail about how to do biomass sampling from the field\, and how to make sense of the lab results using the free online calculator from Oregon State University. He will work through an example of predicting PAN\, and highlight the potential to reduce reliance on lab testing as a result of creating an on-farm database with potential for collaboration with other farms. \nNo-Till Potatoes: A Farmer Researcher Panel \nNovember 30th\, 10:30am-12:00pm \nNo-till production practices for potatoes might sound like an oxymoron for this hilling-intensive crop. Or is it? Join EFAO members and farmer-researchers Matt Jones\, Patti Charbaneau\, Rob Read\, and Ken Laing as they describe the methods they are trialing and the varieties they are working with to make organic no-till potato production a reality in Ontario. Some of these promising methods include use of spoiled hay\, woodchips\, compost\, and planting directly into a cover crop. \nGrowing Small Grains in Ontario: A speaker panel (part 2) \n\nNovember  29th\, 3:30-5:00pm\n\nPart 2 of this 2-part speaker panel focuses on an agronomy deep dive. Gather in this session to hear from farmers that have been learning in the literal field of growing small grains. We’ll get into the nitty gritty agronomic decisions that go into growing high-quality grains using ecological methods. We’ll talk about tillage\, timing\, fertility\, crop protection and all the tools an ecological farmer can use to get the most out of their small grains crops. We’ll also discuss mentorship in the grain growing community: who can we learn from\, and how? This farmer panel is made up of folks who have different ways of sourcing seed\, growing crops\, and marketing products with one thing in common: a passion for growing grain in a way that benefits the environment and their farms. Come to hear their unique perspectives on all things grain-growing. Bring your questions!\n\n\nFor more information about the conference (including the full agenda) and to register for one or both days\, visit https://efao.ca/efao-conference-2023/

SUMMARY:A case for the moldboard plough: Prudent tillage with cover crops (RESCHEDULED)
DESCRIPTION:Brett Israel of 3Gen Organics reduced tillage for organic field crops using forage crops—and a moldboard plough. He shares his successes and challenges along the way. He will talk about the systems he is developing for organic reduced tillage soybeans with cereal rye and “alfalfa-fueled corn”\, which is organic field corn that they grow with alfalfa as the sole source of additional nitrogen. \nFor more information or to register\, visit https://efao.ca/event/double-crop-3gen/

SUMMARY:Rotational Grazing for Climate Resilience
DESCRIPTION:This full-day field day will include a tour of Meeting Place Organic Farm\, a multigenerational farm in Lucknow Ontario\, including cattle\, pigs\, horses and poultry on pasture using portable electric fencing and poultry hutches. The discussion will focus on how rotational grazing works and how you can integrate these methods into your own farm plans. Pasture charts will be available with a discussion of how to use them to keep track of your pasture activities during the grazing season. There will also be a discussion of the role of pastures and hay land in the carbon cycle and the water cycle.  We will consider how these impact carbon sequestration and farm resilience in the face of drought and flooding.  This August tour will be a chance to see pastures after they have been through a significant portion of the grazing season. \nFor more information and to register\, visit https://efao.ca/event/rotational-grazing-climate-resilience/ \n\n
