Project: Understanding transitions in Ontario’s potato sector – a study of key drivers to behaviour change in the uptake of sustainable BMPs

Study: Supported by the University of Guelph in collaboration with OMAFRA, this study will explore existing and potential Best Management Practices to promote sustainability and productivity within the Ontario potato sector. Through conversations and consultations with farmers in Southern Ontario, we hope to understand:

  • How growers are currently affected by climatic and economic challenges
  • Current strategies being implemented by growers to overcome these issues
  • Examples of successful, sustainable Best Management Practices in the field

Goals and Outcomes: This study aims to support the sustainability and resilience of Ontario’s potato production sector by promoting the innovative best management practices of farmers in this sector.

Purpose of the survey: By participating in this survey, you will contribute to our understanding of the challenges you face in your farming operation, the methods and practices utilized to overcome them, and the government and financial support you receive.

The team: Conducted by a multi-disciplinary team of researchers across the rural planning and development department of the University of Guelph. Principle Investigator Silvia Sarapura has more than fifteen years of proven experience in the fields of sustainable agri-food planning for development, gender transformative change and agricultural Research for Development. She has a wealth of experience working with agricultural stakeholders and farmers on topics related to climate-smart agriculture, resilience, and capacity building. Silvia conducted her PhD and MSc research with potato growers in the Peruvian Andes and before migrating to Canada Silvia worked for 10 years as an agronomist with the International Potato Center.
