I am writing this report in early November on what seems to be another cool and damp day. The weather has made for a “frustrating harvest” to say the least in the past few weeks. Some nice weather prior to Thanksgiving gave a nice window to get some beans and corn silage harvested. But since then we have only been given some very marginal days to get crops off. From what I have heard it sounds like yields have been good, so at least the difficult harvest efforts will be worthwhile.
There is not too much new with Soil and Crop since the last newsletter, as fall is one of the busiest times for everybody on their own farms. Plans are in place for the upcoming Grey County Winter Meeting as well as Grey Bruce Farmers’ Week. Look for more details on these events in this newsletter. The winter meeting will be held on Friday December 15th in Rocklyn once again this year.
The meeting in Rocklyn will also mark the end of my 2 year term serving as President of Grey County Soil and Crop. I would like to thank the directors that I had the pleasure of working with over this time. We put on some excellent events, both in person and virtually, that seemed to be well received by the Grey County membership. I am excited for what Grey County Soil and Crop will accomplish in the coming years, as we have some great people involved. With that, I wish everyone success in wrapping up harvest over the next couple months. And most importantly, please remember to make farm safety a top priority on your farms. The crops will always be there to harvest, but accidents can’t be undone.
Brandon Dietrich, Grey SCIA President.
