Old, unused wells can pose risks to your water supply and farming operations. Properly closing (or “decommissioning”) these wells helps protect groundwater and improves field safety and efficiency.

If you farm in Waterloo Region, the City of Hamilton, or Dufferin, Brant, Oxford, Haldimand, or Wellington Counties, you may qualify for grant funding through the Rural Water Quality Program (RWQP). This funding helps cover the cost of hiring a licensed well contractor to safely plug unused wells according to Ontario Regulation 903 under the Ontario Water Resources Act.

Why decommission unused wells?

  • Prevents contamination of groundwater
  • Reduces hazards for equipment and workers
  • Improves land usability and crop management
  • Supports source water protection efforts

Tenant farmers are encouraged to talk to landowners about applying. Working together benefits both parties and helps protect the land for future use.
