SUMMARY:On-Farm Research Meet Up (Niagara)
DESCRIPTION:Join OSCIA and Larry Dyck at Campden Grain to talk all things on-farm research\, nitrogen efficiency\, cover cropping and soil health! \nFor years\, Larry Dyck and his family have been experimenting with practices like no-till\, cover cropping and planting green to make their clay soils more manageable and resilient. Larry’s search for knowledge has contributed to his decision to participate in applied research programs like ONFARM and Living Lab – Ontario. \nLearn more about the on-farm research underway at Larry’s farm\, including: \nONFARM \nThe On-Farm Applied Research and Monitoring (ONFARM) program is a nine-year applied research initiative that supports soil health and water quality research on farms across Ontario. Hear from researchers at the Soil Resource Group about Larry’s ONFARM trial comparing different cover crop mixes (including a biostrip treatment) to increase organic matter and improve soil structure. \nLiving Lab – Ontario \nThe Living Lab – Ontario (LL-ON) is a five-year innovation project that brings together farmers\, organizations\, researchers\, and other experts to co-develop\, test\, and evaluate beneficial management practices (BMPs) that address climate change challenges in livestock and cropping systems. Hear from Craig Drury\, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada\, who is working with farmers\, including Larry\, to trial various 4R strategies to enhance nitrogen use efficiency in corn. \nGreenbelt Foundation Soil Health Program \nThe Greenbelt Foundation will also be joining to discuss their Free Soil Health Program which aims to develop an interpretable\, scalable\, locally relevant method for evaluating and monitoring soil health. Enjoy a soil health demonstration and learn how farmers in York\, Durham\, and Niagara regions may be eligible for a free soil health report. \nRegistration is required. Visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/on-farm-research-meet-up-tickets-927263238307?aff=oddtdtcreator \nFor more information\, please contact onfarm@ontariosoilcrop.org. \n

SUMMARY:Better Together: Improving Soil Health in Ontario
DESCRIPTION:  \nInnovative sustainable agricultural practices have been developed by farmers throughout Ontario\, demonstrating that healthy soil systems and farm profits can happily coexist. By sharing your expertise and participating in soil health sampling\, you have been instrumental in developing new methods for evaluating and monitoring soil health in Ontario. Your contribution has already helped fellow producers make informed decisions about which practices to implement for maximum soil health benefit! \nJoin the Greenbelt Foundation Soil Health Program and Erin Common Ground for a FREE event at GoodLot Farm on Tuesday July 9\, 2024 from 5pm to 9pm. This event will include presentations from industry professionals on soil health assessment and opportunities to learn and connect with fellow producers and soil enthusiasts – and of course\, supper! \nIf you participated in the Greenbelt Foundation’s Soil Health Program\, we encourage you to bring along your results report to refer to during the presentations and discussions. Erin Common Ground participants are invited to enjoy an evening of soil health discussions which will guide the development of ECG’s upcoming Building Common Ground Project! \nBy attending and contributing\, your feedback will inform the development of new methods for evaluating and monitoring soil health in Ontario. \nPresentations include: \n\nSoil History of the Area – with Ted Taylor\nManagement Impact on Soil Health Indicators – with Adam Hayes\n2023 Results and Report Overview – with Ryan Carlow\nSoil Organic Matters – Sarah Larsen\n\nFor more information\, please visit:   \nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/better-together-improving-soil-health-in-ontario-tickets-912117657467

SUMMARY:Cattle Grazing Grasslands\, grazing\, and perennial forages for agricultural carbon storage (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Grasslands and perennial forages across western Canada have revenue streams that are limited to forage production and stock themselves\, but they also play a critical role in carbon (C) sequestration. We’ll discuss how specialized grazing systems can alter grassland function\, forage production\, water infiltration\, soil microbial properties\, and\, ultimately\, soil C storage. \nThis webinar has been organized by the American Society of Agronomy in collaboration with Farmers for Climate Solutions. \nSpeaker:\nEdward Bork\, Professor of Range Ecology and Management\, University of Alberta \nRegister here: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/20187470206318936 \nNote: This session must be attended LIVE to qualify as a KSE. SUMMARY:What is the “right rate” of N\, and how should we determine it? (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:A key facet in “right rate” is determining an appropriate yield goal. Instead of getting lost in the never-ending quest for maximum yield\, consider goals that are in the producer’s best interest\, provide maximum profit\, deliver maximum benefit\, and acknowledge other sources of N to the crop. We’ll discuss how these factors of making N fertilizer recommendations are the future of climate-smart agriculture. \nThis webinar has been organized by the American Society of Agronomy in collaboration with Farmers for Climate Solutions. \nSpeaker:\nDavid Burton\, Director\, Centre for Sustainable Soil Management\, Department of Plant\, Food\, and Environmental Sciences\, Dalhousie University \nRegister here: https://register.gotowebinar.com/register/5276364323905798237 \nNote: This session must be attended LIVE to qualify as a KSE.
