SUMMARY:Twilight Meeting & Industry Tour
DESCRIPTION:2025-TWILIGHT-MEETING\n6:30 pm – Tour of the Living Labs On-farm Research Trials.\nJust past 7812 Sideroad 5\, Fergus ON N1M 2W3 \nJoin us for an exclusive look at an innovative on-farm greenhouse gas (GHG) monitoring project underway at a commercial dairy farm in Fergus\, Ontario. Launched in May 2024\, this trial compares conventional practices with improved\, codeveloped approaches to measure real-time nitrous oxide (N₂O) and carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. The goal: to make the ‘invisible’ visible for farmers by improving understanding of emissions\, their impacts\, and how science can guide better management.\nLearn about the study’s role in Canada’s GHG footprint analysis\, explore real-time monitoring tools\, and discover how this research is helping bridge the gap between science and on-farm practice. \n7:45 pm – Tour of Adaptive Nitrogen Trails with Ken Musselman and the Ontario Soil Network.\nApprox 6387 4th Line East\, Elora ON N0B 1S0 \nJoin the Ontario Soil Network (OSN) and host Ken Musselman for an evening focused on fine-tuning fertilizer rates and digging into the details of nitrogen management. Take a tour of Ken’s adaptive nitrogen trials and check out his no-till equipment in action. It’s a great opportunity to see innovative practices up close and connect with fellow farmers and agronomists for a hands-on\, practical discussion about all things nitrogen. Ken’s trials are part of the Adaptive Nitrogen Trials\, a collaborative project between OSN\, the Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario (EFAO)\, and the Fertilizer Canada Sustainability (FCS) initiative. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen? Wednesday\, July 9\, starting @ 6:30 PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration? To pre-register\, you can text Krista Bates at 519-766-8252 or email scia-wellington@ontariosoilcrop.com. There will be donuts and cold drinks served at the 2nd location. \nREGISTER HERE \nTwilight Meeting & Industry Tour is an OSCIA-recognized Knowledge Sharing Event (KSE) for farmers with On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) projects in the Nitrogen Management category. \n

SUMMARY:Cycles that Feed the Farm and the Farmers: Soil\, Seed\, and System Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a rare opportunity to spend the day with renowned plant breeder and farmer-led researcher Duane Falk to explore how a thoughtful rotation and on-farm research can build soil fertility\, resilience\, and seed self-reliance. \nDuane will guide participants through his innovative 5-year organic rotation\, which includes breeding and saving seed from key cover crops like red clover\, rye\, winter peas\, and multispecies mixes. Tour five diverse field stops—including potatoes\, winter cereals\, and oats\, and dig into practical strategies for soil health\, low-input fertility\, and rotational planning that works well through time and space. \nDuane brings over 40 years of plant breeding and agronomy experience and a deep passion for improving methodology to reduce effort and increase impact. Now farming off-grid with his partner Vita near Hillsburgh in Wellington County\, he continues to implement farmer-led research with EFAO and Experimental Acres on topics like overwintering cover crops and nitrogen availability. Duane has also been an active participant of Erin Common Ground\, working together with other farmers and citizen scientists in his home community to build community and healthier soils. \nThe day wraps with a bring-your-own-lunch and community discussion on the machinery\, tools\, systems\, and mindset needed to farm ecologically and self-reliantly in a changing climate. \nBring your lunch\, your curiosity\, and your questions! \nHosted in partnership with Erin Common Ground\, and Wellington County’s Experimental Acres program.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen? Thursday\, July 3 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere? Mimosa Breeding & Research\, 5965 Second Line\, Orton\, Ontario L0N 1N0 Canada \nCost? SUMMARY:Nitrogen Management Strategies to Increase Nitrogen Availability in Crops
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin a virtual event with Craig Drury\, from  Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada at the Harrow Research & Development Centre presenting on nitrogen management strategies to increase nitrogen availability to crops. \nWhen nitrogen fertilizer is added to soils\, it undergoes enzymatic and microbial reactions and some of these processes can result in losses of a very expensive fertilizer input. This presentation will provide examples of different approaches that could be used to help your farm operation reduce these losses and increase the amount of nitrogen available to your crops.  Field trials conducted over the last 12 years have examined different nitrogen fertilizer sources (including inhibitors)\, application methods (broadcast\, broadcast & incorporated\, or injection)\, timing (planting\, side-dress\, late application) and fertilizer rates. A recent study has also looked at some of these nitrogen management practices when cover crops are present.  Results from these field studies as well as those from the 2024 living lab trials will be presented and discussed. \nWhen? Tuesday June 23\, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm \nREGISTER HERE! \nNitrogen Management Strategies to Increase Nitrogen Availability in Crops is an OSCIA-recognized Knowledge Sharing Event (KSE) for farmers with On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) projects in the Nitrogen Management category.
