SUMMARY:Strategic Cover Cropping: Tailored Solutions for Farm-Specific Challenges and Herbicide Integration
DESCRIPTION:The Ontario Certified Crop Advisor Association (CCA) and Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association (OSCIA) have partnered to deliver training and educational resources to Ontario agrologists. With a focus on cover crops\, nitrogen management\, and rotational grazing\, these sessions will support the objectives of the On-Farm Climate Action Fund. Check out the full webinar series schedule here. \nJoin us on Wednesday\, October 1st\, to hear ICCA of the Year winner Dr. Lee Briese (CCA) for an interactive presentation titled “Strategic Cover Cropping: Tailored Solutions for Farm-Specific Challenges and Herbicide Integration”. Dr. Briese will discuss his experience matching cover crop species with specific issues on each farm\, such as erosion\, excess water\, or compaction\, and selecting herbicides that fit into that system. \nFunding for this project has been provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada through the Agricultural Climate Solutions (ACS) – On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF). \nThis event is free to attend. CEU credits are available. \nREGISTER HERE \nStrategic Cover Cropping: Tailored Solutions for Farm-Specific Challenges and Herbicide Integration is an OSCIA-recognized Knowledge Sharing Event (KSE) for applicants with On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) projects in the Cover Cropping category.

SUMMARY:From Sky to Soil: Drone Innovation Changing the Way We Farm
DESCRIPTION:Curious about drones on the farm? Come see how they’re changing the game—from cover crop seeding to capturing crop data and spraying with precision. We’ll show you how one drone gathers info from the field\, and another follows up with a live demo\, applying a custom prescription based on that data. It’s a hands-on look at how smart tech can save time\, cut costs\, and boost results. Don’t miss it! \nPRESENTATIONS: \nCover Crops from the Sky: What Works\, What Doesn’t\nJoin Jake Munroe\, Soil Management Specialist (Field Crops) OMAFA in the field for a boots-on-the-ground (and drones-in-the-air) look at aerial seeding in action. We’ll dive into the best crop staging for aerial seeding of cover crops—right where it’s happening\, with a demo into standing soybeans. You’ll see early results from last season’s drone seeding efforts\, with photos and insights on what influenced success\, including surface residue\, tillage systems\, and more. We’ll also compare the pros and cons of drone seeding versus traditional methods like drilling or broadcasting. If all goes well\, we’ll even take a peek at a cover crop seeded earlier this season and already growing beneath the canopy. It’s a chance to see what’s working\, what still needs tweaking\, and how aerial seeding might fit into your own system. \n  \nAerial Insights. Clear Results.\nAfter we see how drone cover crops work\, Andres Hurtado\, MBA\, Founder and CEO – Terranova UAV will take us through a live demonstration that brings the future of agriculture into focus. This dynamic event showcases how drone technology is transforming the way we manage crops—from data capture to precision application. You’ll follow the full journey: watch as aerial data is collected in real time\, see how it’s processed into actionable insights\, and witness a programmed sprayer drone apply treatments with pinpoint accuracy. Learn how targeted applications—based on aerial prescriptions—can reduce input costs\, increase efficiency\, and drive better results in the field. Whether you’re new to drone tech or looking to take your operation to the next level\, this is an event you won’t want to miss. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen? SUMMARY:Waterloo SCIA Twilight Tour
DESCRIPTION:Please join Waterloo SCIA Twilight event on the tour of two farms.  This year’s event will focus on cover crops\, on-farm plastic recycling\, and practical weed and spray management tips.   \n  \n\nHost: Randy Horst\, 6930 Line 86\, Elmira \n\n\n6:30 pm \nCover crop trials: \n\n\nThe largest portion of the field is going to be a trial between Oats\, spring triticale\, and spring rye\, with possible spring wheat and spring barley as a forage crop after wheat. In Waterloo County\, a large percentage of the wheat stubble gets seeded to either oats or oats and peas and then gets harvested as a forage crop in October/November. The big problem with oats\, however\, is crown rust\, it’s almost a guarantee they will get infested with crown rust and if you don’t spray a fungicide\, you will get very poor forage yields. The main goal of the trial will be to see if switching to a spring rye or spring triticale could be a good way to combat the disease and get better forage\, maybe without the need to spray a fungicide. I will also have a few strips of other cover crop mixes so that people who are looking for the more traditional “green manure” or “plow down” cover crop. \n\n\n7:30 p.m. \n\n\nOn-farm plastic recycling     \n\n\nHost: Murray Brubacher\, 855 Arthur St S\, Elmira \n\n\nMurray Brubacher owns Brubacher Drums\, a provider of food-grade plastic barrels\, water containers\, and various storage solutions. They have recently invested in an on-farm plastics recycling that will recycle barrels\, drums\, pails\, and totes. \n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing the tour of the plastics recycling we will hear from Dr. Isabelle Aicklen\, a weeds science professor at the University of Guelph. She will discuss practical weed and spray tips\, including best practices for managing cover crop burn down. \n\n  \nRSVP appreciated but not required by calling/texting 519-546-3193 or emailing waterlooscia@ontariosoilcrop.org \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen? SUMMARY:Ontario Soil Network Road Trip Day 4 - Middlesex County
DESCRIPTION:STOP 1: \nIn 2021\, the UTRCA established a 58 acre demonstration farm near Thorndale\, Ontario. The farm is used to research and demonstrate a number of agricultural best management practices (BMPs)\, including cover cropping\, and showcase how they can improve and protect soil health and water quality while maintaining productivity in the southern Ontario landscape. The farm exhibits a suite of BMPs\, offering multiple opportunities to reduce nutrient and sediment loss at the field scale. \nThe highlight feature of the farm is the contoured controlled drainage system which utilizes a series of Agri-Drain control structures to manage sub-surface drainage across 14 acres of the field\, which can be compared to the conventional tile system covering the remainder of the farm. \nSTOP 2: \nDanny Jefferies is the Agronomy Lead at Honeyland Ag Services\, he oversee a diverse range of agronomic and research-focused initiatives to support customer success and drive innovation in nutrient management. Join Danny for an informal tour looking at tillage treatment & some sulfur treatments in soybeans at the field level and around the lab. Honeyland Ag Services is an agricultural lab located in Southwestern Ontario that provides agricultural decision making services through strong partnerships and innovation. They are focused on providing cutting edge analysis so you can better manage your agricultural inputs. \n  \nWhen?
