SUMMARY:2025 ONFARM Forum
DESCRIPTION:Join us virtually on February 6\, 2025 between 9AM-12PM for our Annual ONFARM Research Forum! \nSince 2019\, the ONFARM program has completed extensive soil health and water quality analysis on farms across Ontario to build a stronger understanding of best management practices (BMPs) and their effect on soil health and water quality. Originally a four-year program\, ONFARM was renewed until 2028. \nDuring the Forum\, we will explore: \n\nThe effects of organic amendment applications and cover crops on yields\, soil health\, and water quality\nHow to interpret carbon and nitrogen soil health indicators\, and which ones are most helpful for tracking improvements in soil health\nThe impacts of cover crops on runoff generation and water quality\nWater quality and soil health opportunities and challenges in Ontario\n\nPlease register for the Forum here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEpdeisrDsuG9HK3ODeIjfwbcmNO_8rm7ky#/registration \nPlease check back in mid-January for more information on our sessions and our speakers. \nONFARM is currently funded by the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership\, a five-year federal-provincial-territorial initiative. Developed by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture\, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) and delivered by the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association (OSCIA)\, ONFARM monitors soil health and water quality on working farms across the province\, examining the effectiveness of different agricultural BMPs. \nThis event will be an Ontario On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) Knowledge Sharing Event (KSE) in the category of cover cropping. We will apply for Continuing Education Credits (CEU) for Certified Crop Advisors. \n\n\n\n\nTime\nActivity\n\n\n9:00 am\n\nWelcome & setting the stage\n Speakers: \n\nWilton Consulting Group (WCG)\nDr. Angela Straathof\, Ontario Soil & Crop Improvement Association (OSCIA)\n\n\n\n\n9:25 am\n\nChallenges and opportunities with ag research in Northern Ontario\n Speakers: \n\nLeia Weaver\, Northern Ontario Farm Innovation Alliance\nBirgit Martin\, OSCIA\n\n\n\n\n9:40 am\n\nDigging into carbon and nitrogen soil health indicators\n Speaker: \n\nAdam Hayes\, Soil Resource Group\n\n\n\n\n10:00 am\n\nThe effects of best management practices on yields and soil health\n Speakers: \n\nCaleb Niemeyer\, Woodrill Farms and the University of Guelph\nMargaret Ribey\, Soil Resource Group\nLuke Hannam\, ONFARM cooperator\n\n\n\n\n10:45 am\nBreak\n\n\n11:00 am\n\nThe impacts of cover crops on runoff generation and water quality\n Speakers: \n\nDonna Small\, Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority\nBeth Wrona\, Upper Thames River Conservation Authority\nMari Veliz\, Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority\n\n\n\n\n11:30 am\n\nHow to incorporate cover crops throughout a rotation\n Speakers: \n\nSarah Midlane-Jones\nJennifer Nash\, OSCIA\n\n\n\n\n11:50 am\n\nClosing remarks\n Speaker: \n\nBirgit Martin\, OSCIA
