SUMMARY:Optimizing Nitrogen Efficiency in Dairy Systems
DESCRIPTION:Join OSCIA\, Soils at Guelph and the County of Wellington for a drop-in event on July 18 to learn more about the research underway at Harrcroft Acres Ltd. through the Living Lab – Ontario project. \nJanet Harrop\, dairy farmer and living lab cooperator\, is collaborating with Dr. Claudia Wagner-Riddle from the University of Guelph to conduct innovative research at the field scale. The research focuses on finding ways to enhance nitrogen efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions using 4R best management practices\, including nitrogen stabilizers and different application methods of liquid dairy manure. \nRegistration is required. Please visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/optimizing-nitrogen-efficiency-a-systems-approach-to-dairy-production-tickets-927491882187 to register.  \nRegistrants are encouraged to drop in for presentations starting at 6:30 pm or 7:30 pm. Light refreshments will be provided. \nLiving Lab – Ontario is a five-year innovation project that brings together farmers\, organizations\, researchers\, and other experts to co-develop\, test\, and evaluate beneficial management practices (BMPs) that address climate change challenges in livestock and cropping systems. \nFor more information\, please contact livinglab@ontariosoilcrop.org. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nFunding for the project has been provided by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada under the Agricultural Climate Solutions – Living Labs program (ACS-CA-15) and by the following partners: Beef Farmers of Ontario\, Dairy Farmers of Ontario\, Grain Farmers of Ontario\, Ontario Federation of Agriculture\, Ontario Pork and Ontario Sheep Farmers. SUMMARY:On-Farm Research Meet Up (Niagara)
DESCRIPTION:Join OSCIA and Larry Dyck at Campden Grain to talk all things on-farm research\, nitrogen efficiency\, cover cropping and soil health! \nFor years\, Larry Dyck and his family have been experimenting with practices like no-till\, cover cropping and planting green to make their clay soils more manageable and resilient. Larry’s search for knowledge has contributed to his decision to participate in applied research programs like ONFARM and Living Lab – Ontario. \nLearn more about the on-farm research underway at Larry’s farm\, including: \nONFARM \nThe On-Farm Applied Research and Monitoring (ONFARM) program is a nine-year applied research initiative that supports soil health and water quality research on farms across Ontario. Hear from researchers at the Soil Resource Group about Larry’s ONFARM trial comparing different cover crop mixes (including a biostrip treatment) to increase organic matter and improve soil structure. \nLiving Lab – Ontario \nThe Living Lab – Ontario (LL-ON) is a five-year innovation project that brings together farmers\, organizations\, researchers\, and other experts to co-develop\, test\, and evaluate beneficial management practices (BMPs) that address climate change challenges in livestock and cropping systems. Hear from Craig Drury\, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada\, who is working with farmers\, including Larry\, to trial various 4R strategies to enhance nitrogen use efficiency in corn. \nGreenbelt Foundation Soil Health Program \nThe Greenbelt Foundation will also be joining to discuss their Free Soil Health Program which aims to develop an interpretable\, scalable\, locally relevant method for evaluating and monitoring soil health. Enjoy a soil health demonstration and learn how farmers in York\, Durham\, and Niagara regions may be eligible for a free soil health report. \nRegistration is required. Visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/on-farm-research-meet-up-tickets-927263238307?aff=oddtdtcreator \nFor more information\, please contact onfarm@ontariosoilcrop.org. \n

SUMMARY:Profitable Pastures: Getting Started on Rotational Grazing (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open for the 2024 Profitable Pastures webinar series! The Ontario Forage Network has three excellent speakers lined up to help you get the most out of your pasture. This year’s webinars will take place from 8:00 pm until 9:00 pm Eastern time on March 5th\, 6th\, and 7th. \nTuesday\, March 5\, 2024\nGetting Started on Rotational Grazing with Joe Dickenson \nThere is a lot of emphasis on rotational grazing right now. Everyone is talking about the environmental and production benefits that rotational grazing can bring to a farm. While conversations are ongoing around how to improve an existing rotational system\, it can be hard to find information on how to start. Joe’s talk aims to address that gap. \nFor more information or to register\, visit https://onforagenetwork.ca/ontario-forage-council/profitable-pastures/  \nNote: These sessions must be attended live in order to qualify as a Knowledge Sharing Event. A recording of the session does not qualify.

SUMMARY:What Did We Learn in 2023? What Should We Do in 2024?
DESCRIPTION:What Did We Learn in 2023? What Should We Do in 2024?  \nThe 2023 crop season was driven by weather challenges-too hot\, too dry\, too wet\, too cool. From this we saw many crop responses like reduced emergence\, extreme crop height\, white mould\, ear moulds. Let’s discuss what was learned from 2023 and see how to apply that to crop plans in 2024.  \nPresented by: Deb Campbell\, Agronomist at Agronomy Advantage and Carrie Davenport\, Agronomist at Georgian View Ag Services Ltd.  \nWednesday February 28th\, 2024\, 1:30 – 4:30 pm at Grey Ag Services\, also livestreamed. $20. SUMMARY:Grassland Bird Conservation on Farms
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Zoe Lebrun-Southcott\, Dr Andrew Campmozzi and Hanna Kirchmeir\, all of Bird Ecology and Conservation Ontario \nSaturday February 24th\, 2024\, 1:30 – 3:30 pm at Grey Ag Services. \nCost: $20.00. Please register here to attend in-person. \n\n\n\n\nGrassland bird species at risk\, such as bobolink\, rely on hayfields and pastures for nesting habitat in Ontario. Bird Ecology and Conservation Ontario\, a small non-profit organization\, has been working with farmers since 2016 to implement stewardship for nesting grassland birds while trying to minimize negative impacts on farm production. Join us to learn about the grassland birds that may be nesting in your hayfields and pastures and to find out what we have learned so far about the challenges and opportunities for grassland bird conservation in agricultural grasslands. We encourage course participants to share details about their farm operations for a collaborative discussion about finding ways to make space for nesting grassland birds in hayfield and pasture management plans.
