SUMMARY:On-Farm Research Meet Up (Niagara)
DESCRIPTION:Join OSCIA and Larry Dyck at Campden Grain to talk all things on-farm research\, nitrogen efficiency\, cover cropping and soil health! \nFor years\, Larry Dyck and his family have been experimenting with practices like no-till\, cover cropping and planting green to make their clay soils more manageable and resilient. Larry’s search for knowledge has contributed to his decision to participate in applied research programs like ONFARM and Living Lab – Ontario. \nLearn more about the on-farm research underway at Larry’s farm\, including: \nONFARM \nThe On-Farm Applied Research and Monitoring (ONFARM) program is a nine-year applied research initiative that supports soil health and water quality research on farms across Ontario. Hear from researchers at the Soil Resource Group about Larry’s ONFARM trial comparing different cover crop mixes (including a biostrip treatment) to increase organic matter and improve soil structure. \nLiving Lab – Ontario \nThe Living Lab – Ontario (LL-ON) is a five-year innovation project that brings together farmers\, organizations\, researchers\, and other experts to co-develop\, test\, and evaluate beneficial management practices (BMPs) that address climate change challenges in livestock and cropping systems. Hear from Craig Drury\, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada\, who is working with farmers\, including Larry\, to trial various 4R strategies to enhance nitrogen use efficiency in corn. \nGreenbelt Foundation Soil Health Program \nThe Greenbelt Foundation will also be joining to discuss their Free Soil Health Program which aims to develop an interpretable\, scalable\, locally relevant method for evaluating and monitoring soil health. Enjoy a soil health demonstration and learn how farmers in York\, Durham\, and Niagara regions may be eligible for a free soil health report. \nRegistration is required. Visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/on-farm-research-meet-up-tickets-927263238307?aff=oddtdtcreator \nFor more information\, please contact onfarm@ontariosoilcrop.org. \n

SUMMARY:Kirkview Farms Rotational Grazing Field Day
DESCRIPTION:At Kirkview Farms\, Cora\, Mike and their team practice regenerative agriculture – raising grass-finished beef\, pastured poultry\, goats and pork in a way that prioritizes animal welfare and environmental sustainability while producing high-quality meats. \nJoin us for a half-day field day to learn how the Kirkview team uses rotational grazing to improve the health and welfare of their livestock\, reduce input costs and care for the soil. You will also get a chance to check out some of the tools they use as regenerative farmers\, including a demonstration of how electric bikes can be used as a climate-friendly tool in moving livestock across acreage. \nCora and Mike will give an overview of the grass fed market\, grass fed genetics\, pasture forages\, grazing plans\, fencing and water supply\, as well as logistics and timing of rotating the different groups of livestock through the paddocks. No matter what type of farming you do\, you will learn something during this field day! \nPreparation \nFeel free to bring your own bagged lunch for a community picnic after the tour. \nParking \nPeople are welcome to park at the farm. \nAccessibility information \nPortable washroom will be available. \nThis event is an OSCIA-recognized Knowledge Sharing Event (KSE) for farmers with On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) projects in the Rotational Grazing Systems category. \nThis day is presented in partnership with Farmers for Climate Solutions and with funding support from the On-Farm Climate Action Fund. \nIn order to make our training and community building events accessible to all farmers and future farmers in Ontario\, EFAO strives to reduce financial barriers for registration by using a Pay What You Can model.
