SUMMARY:Webinar: Sowing solutions: Why these cover cropping BMPs? / Solutions d’ensemencement Pourquoi avoir choisi ces PGB s’appliquant aux cultures de couverture?
DESCRIPTION:Join Farmers for Climate Solutions for a 60-minute free webinar where we will dive into the science and benefits of cover cropping. \n\n\n\nHow cover crops sequester carbon (and benefit your farm in other ways too) \nCover crops are helping farms improve soil health\, manage nutrients\, and build resilience\, but what processes are driving these changes in the field? In this webinar\, farmers and researchers will walk through the processes by which cover crops sequester carbon\, what we know about their impact on nitrous oxide emissions\, and how species selection and management decisions shape these outcomes. We’ll also explore the broader on-farm benefits that are motivating adoption across Canada. Monday\, Feb 2 @ 1:00 pm -2:00 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE \nSowing solutions: Why these cover cropping BMPs? is an OSCIA-recognized Knowledge Sharing Event (KSE) for farmers with On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) projects in the Cover Cropping category.

SUMMARY:From Sky to Soil: Drone Innovation Changing the Way We Farm
DESCRIPTION:Curious about drones on the farm? Come see how they’re changing the game—from cover crop seeding to capturing crop data and spraying with precision. We’ll show you how one drone gathers info from the field\, and another follows up with a live demo\, applying a custom prescription based on that data. It’s a hands-on look at how smart tech can save time\, cut costs\, and boost results. Don’t miss it! \nPRESENTATIONS: \nCover Crops from the Sky: What Works\, What Doesn’t\nJoin Jake Munroe\, Soil Management Specialist (Field Crops) OMAFA in the field for a boots-on-the-ground (and drones-in-the-air) look at aerial seeding in action. We’ll dive into the best crop staging for aerial seeding of cover crops—right where it’s happening\, with a demo into standing soybeans. You’ll see early results from last season’s drone seeding efforts\, with photos and insights on what influenced success\, including surface residue\, tillage systems\, and more. We’ll also compare the pros and cons of drone seeding versus traditional methods like drilling or broadcasting. If all goes well\, we’ll even take a peek at a cover crop seeded earlier this season and already growing beneath the canopy. It’s a chance to see what’s working\, what still needs tweaking\, and how aerial seeding might fit into your own system. \n  \nAerial Insights. Clear Results.\nAfter we see how drone cover crops work\, Andres Hurtado\, MBA\, Founder and CEO – Terranova UAV will take us through a live demonstration that brings the future of agriculture into focus. This dynamic event showcases how drone technology is transforming the way we manage crops—from data capture to precision application. You’ll follow the full journey: watch as aerial data is collected in real time\, see how it’s processed into actionable insights\, and witness a programmed sprayer drone apply treatments with pinpoint accuracy. Learn how targeted applications—based on aerial prescriptions—can reduce input costs\, increase efficiency\, and drive better results in the field. SUMMARY:Waterloo SCIA Twilight Tour
DESCRIPTION:Please join Waterloo SCIA Twilight event on the tour of two farms.  This year’s event will focus on cover crops\, on-farm plastic recycling\, and practical weed and spray management tips.   \n  \n\nHost: Randy Horst\, 6930 Line 86\, Elmira \n\n\n6:30 pm \nCover crop trials: \n\n\nThe largest portion of the field is going to be a trial between Oats\, spring triticale\, and spring rye\, with possible spring wheat and spring barley as a forage crop after wheat. In Waterloo County\, a large percentage of the wheat stubble gets seeded to either oats or oats and peas and then gets harvested as a forage crop in October/November. The big problem with oats\, however\, is crown rust\, it’s almost a guarantee they will get infested with crown rust and if you don’t spray a fungicide\, you will get very poor forage yields. The main goal of the trial will be to see if switching to a spring rye or spring triticale could be a good way to combat the disease and get better forage\, maybe without the need to spray a fungicide. I will also have a few strips of other cover crop mixes so that people who are looking for the more traditional “green manure” or “plow down” cover crop. \n\n\n7:30 p.m. \n\n\nOn-farm plastic recycling     \n\n\nHost: Murray Brubacher\, 855 Arthur St S\, Elmira \n\n\nMurray Brubacher owns Brubacher Drums\, a provider of food-grade plastic barrels\, water containers\, and various storage solutions. They have recently invested in an on-farm plastics recycling that will recycle barrels\, drums\, pails\, and totes. \n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing the tour of the plastics recycling we will hear from Dr. Isabelle Aicklen\, a weeds science professor at the University of Guelph. She will discuss practical weed and spray tips\, including best practices for managing cover crop burn down. \n\n  \nRSVP appreciated but not required by calling/texting 519-546-3193 or emailing waterlooscia@ontariosoilcrop.org \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen? SUMMARY:Stories of Innovation at Ferme Houle Farm
DESCRIPTION:All Indigenous growers\, land stewards and community members are welcome to attend this field day free of charge! Please use the coupon code BOOT2025 when filling out the registration form to receive free admission. \nAndre Houle of Ferme Houle Farm isn’t scared to try something new. Andre and his family are third and fourth generation farmers on this land\, and transitioned it to organic in 2021\, after many years of more conventional farming. \nWithin a few years of this transition\, they went from a corn/soybean rotation and plowing every inch of soil\, to growing wheat\, rye\, barley\, peas\, hairy vetch\, red clover\, buckwheat\, oats\, and fava beans along with corn and soybeans. They intercrop many of these crops in an effort to feed the soil biology\, and use cover crops to keep the soil covered as much as we can. They are using roller-crimping techniques\, no-till\, minimal tillage and plowing only when necessary. \nThis year\, in an effort to continue to experiment and innovate\, Andre and his team have embarked on some soil health trials on the farm. \nJoin us at this field day for a field tour and discussion of the Ferme Houle Farm story\, a look at their cover cropping methods and processes\, a drone demonstration and an exploration and discussion of some of these on-farm trials: \n1. Intercropping: Barley and Peas\, Fall Rye and Hairy Vetch\, Fall Rye\, Hairy Vetch and Oats\, Oats and Clover\, Corn and Soybeans \n2. Polycropping: Small sections of multiple crops to see what we can harvest together – Peas\, Faba beans\, Wheat\, Barley\, Oats\, Flax\, Phacaelia\, Rye\, Hairy vetch \n3. No-till Soybeans: Baling fall rye for the cows and no-till seeding soybeans in the stubble \n4. No-till Buckwheat: Harvesting Fall Rye and no-tilling Buckwheat 5. Wheat and Oat Breeding: Participatory Plant Breeding (PPB) program—a collaboration between the University of Manitoba and the Bauta Initiative (a program of SeedChange) that supports farmers in developing wheat\, oat\, and potato varieties for organic and ecological farming. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen? SUMMARY:Cycles that Feed the Farm and the Farmers: Soil\, Seed\, and System Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a rare opportunity to spend the day with renowned plant breeder and farmer-led researcher Duane Falk to explore how a thoughtful rotation and on-farm research can build soil fertility\, resilience\, and seed self-reliance. \nDuane will guide participants through his innovative 5-year organic rotation\, which includes breeding and saving seed from key cover crops like red clover\, rye\, winter peas\, and multispecies mixes. Tour five diverse field stops—including potatoes\, winter cereals\, and oats\, and dig into practical strategies for soil health\, low-input fertility\, and rotational planning that works well through time and space. \nDuane brings over 40 years of plant breeding and agronomy experience and a deep passion for improving methodology to reduce effort and increase impact. Now farming off-grid with his partner Vita near Hillsburgh in Wellington County\, he continues to implement farmer-led research with EFAO and Experimental Acres on topics like overwintering cover crops and nitrogen availability. Duane has also been an active participant of Erin Common Ground\, working together with other farmers and citizen scientists in his home community to build community and healthier soils. \nThe day wraps with a bring-your-own-lunch and community discussion on the machinery\, tools\, systems\, and mindset needed to farm ecologically and self-reliantly in a changing climate. \nBring your lunch\, your curiosity\, and your questions! \nHosted in partnership with Erin Common Ground\, and Wellington County’s Experimental Acres program.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen?
