SUMMARY:Waterloo SCIA Twilight Tour
DESCRIPTION:Please join Waterloo SCIA Twilight event on the tour of two farms.  This year’s event will focus on cover crops\, on-farm plastic recycling\, and practical weed and spray management tips.   \n  \n\nHost: Randy Horst\, 6930 Line 86\, Elmira \n\n\n6:30 pm \nCover crop trials: \n\n\nThe largest portion of the field is going to be a trial between Oats\, spring triticale\, and spring rye\, with possible spring wheat and spring barley as a forage crop after wheat. In Waterloo County\, a large percentage of the wheat stubble gets seeded to either oats or oats and peas and then gets harvested as a forage crop in October/November. The big problem with oats\, however\, is crown rust\, it’s almost a guarantee they will get infested with crown rust and if you don’t spray a fungicide\, you will get very poor forage yields. The main goal of the trial will be to see if switching to a spring rye or spring triticale could be a good way to combat the disease and get better forage\, maybe without the need to spray a fungicide. I will also have a few strips of other cover crop mixes so that people who are looking for the more traditional “green manure” or “plow down” cover crop. \n\n\n7:30 p.m. \n\n\nOn-farm plastic recycling     \n\n\nHost: Murray Brubacher\, 855 Arthur St S\, Elmira \n\n\nMurray Brubacher owns Brubacher Drums\, a provider of food-grade plastic barrels\, water containers\, and various storage solutions. They have recently invested in an on-farm plastics recycling that will recycle barrels\, drums\, pails\, and totes. \n\n\n\n\n\nFollowing the tour of the plastics recycling we will hear from Dr. Isabelle Aicklen\, a weeds science professor at the University of Guelph. She will discuss practical weed and spray tips\, including best practices for managing cover crop burn down. \n\n  \nRSVP appreciated but not required by calling/texting 519-546-3193 or emailing waterlooscia@ontariosoilcrop.org \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen? Thursday\, September 4 @ 6:30 pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere? 6930 Line 86\, Elmira \n  \nWaterloo SCIA Twilight Tour is an OSCIA-recognized Knowledge Sharing Event (KSE) for farmers with On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) projects in the Cover Cropping category. \n

SUMMARY:Ontario Soil Network Road Trip Day 4 - Middlesex County
DESCRIPTION:STOP 1: \nIn 2021\, the UTRCA established a 58 acre demonstration farm near Thorndale\, Ontario. The farm is used to research and demonstrate a number of agricultural best management practices (BMPs)\, including cover cropping\, and showcase how they can improve and protect soil health and water quality while maintaining productivity in the southern Ontario landscape. The farm exhibits a suite of BMPs\, offering multiple opportunities to reduce nutrient and sediment loss at the field scale. \nThe highlight feature of the farm is the contoured controlled drainage system which utilizes a series of Agri-Drain control structures to manage sub-surface drainage across 14 acres of the field\, which can be compared to the conventional tile system covering the remainder of the farm. \nSTOP 2: \nDanny Jefferies is the Agronomy Lead at Honeyland Ag Services\, he oversee a diverse range of agronomic and research-focused initiatives to support customer success and drive innovation in nutrient management. Join Danny for an informal tour looking at tillage treatment & some sulfur treatments in soybeans at the field level and around the lab. Honeyland Ag Services is an agricultural lab located in Southwestern Ontario that provides agricultural decision making services through strong partnerships and innovation. They are focused on providing cutting edge analysis so you can better manage your agricultural inputs. \n  \nWhen? SUMMARY:Stories of Innovation at Ferme Houle Farm
DESCRIPTION:All Indigenous growers\, land stewards and community members are welcome to attend this field day free of charge! Please use the coupon code BOOT2025 when filling out the registration form to receive free admission. \nAndre Houle of Ferme Houle Farm isn’t scared to try something new. Andre and his family are third and fourth generation farmers on this land\, and transitioned it to organic in 2021\, after many years of more conventional farming. \nWithin a few years of this transition\, they went from a corn/soybean rotation and plowing every inch of soil\, to growing wheat\, rye\, barley\, peas\, hairy vetch\, red clover\, buckwheat\, oats\, and fava beans along with corn and soybeans. They intercrop many of these crops in an effort to feed the soil biology\, and use cover crops to keep the soil covered as much as we can. They are using roller-crimping techniques\, no-till\, minimal tillage and plowing only when necessary. \nThis year\, in an effort to continue to experiment and innovate\, Andre and his team have embarked on some soil health trials on the farm. \nJoin us at this field day for a field tour and discussion of the Ferme Houle Farm story\, a look at their cover cropping methods and processes\, a drone demonstration and an exploration and discussion of some of these on-farm trials: \n1. Intercropping: Barley and Peas\, Fall Rye and Hairy Vetch\, Fall Rye\, Hairy Vetch and Oats\, Oats and Clover\, Corn and Soybeans \n2. Polycropping: Small sections of multiple crops to see what we can harvest together – Peas\, Faba beans\, Wheat\, Barley\, Oats\, Flax\, Phacaelia\, Rye\, Hairy vetch \n3. No-till Soybeans: Baling fall rye for the cows and no-till seeding soybeans in the stubble \n4. No-till Buckwheat: Harvesting Fall Rye and no-tilling Buckwheat 5. Wheat and Oat Breeding: Participatory Plant Breeding (PPB) program—a collaboration between the University of Manitoba and the Bauta Initiative (a program of SeedChange) that supports farmers in developing wheat\, oat\, and potato varieties for organic and ecological farming. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen? SUMMARY:Bounty in the County: Ecological Farms in PEC
DESCRIPTION:Join EFAO for a day in Prince Edward County that’s not to be missed! Three fabulous EFAO farms will open their doors for a tour in late July. Join us for one\, two or all three stops! \nThe afternoon will kick off at Fiddlehead Farm\, where farmers Heather and Stephanie will walk you through their operation from seed to CSA bin. They’ll share notes on the simple\, inexpensive DIY farm building options that have gotten them through their first fourteen years of farming and dreams of next steps. During an in-depth farm tour\, they will also share about learning from mistakes\, keeping curiosity alive\, and continually improving their systems – a framing that has led to greater satisfaction in farming for themselves\, the team\, and their customers. \nReturn to Earth farm is the second stop\, where participants will have a behind-the-scenes tour of their rotational grazing systems for farm-raised lamb\, pork\, poultry and rabbit. Owners Ben and Kate will also talk about their maple syrup production\, homemade soaps\, and other value-added items. \nAt the final stop for the day\, participants will start with a farm raised and made dinner at Paper Kite Farm. Following a shared meal\, Farmers Hans and Judy will give a farm tour of their diverse multi faceted farm and the ecological production practices they employ. The tour will include a conversation about and look at production of their value-added products\, on-farm camp operations\, and aspirations for a more secure local food system. \nParticipants can participate in one\, two\, or all three farm tours.
