SUMMARY:Ontario Soil Network Road Trip Day 4 - Middlesex County
DESCRIPTION:STOP 1: \nIn 2021\, the UTRCA established a 58 acre demonstration farm near Thorndale\, Ontario. The farm is used to research and demonstrate a number of agricultural best management practices (BMPs)\, including cover cropping\, and showcase how they can improve and protect soil health and water quality while maintaining productivity in the southern Ontario landscape. The farm exhibits a suite of BMPs\, offering multiple opportunities to reduce nutrient and sediment loss at the field scale. \nThe highlight feature of the farm is the contoured controlled drainage system which utilizes a series of Agri-Drain control structures to manage sub-surface drainage across 14 acres of the field\, which can be compared to the conventional tile system covering the remainder of the farm. \nSTOP 2: \nDanny Jefferies is the Agronomy Lead at Honeyland Ag Services\, he oversee a diverse range of agronomic and research-focused initiatives to support customer success and drive innovation in nutrient management. Join Danny for an informal tour looking at tillage treatment & some sulfur treatments in soybeans at the field level and around the lab. Honeyland Ag Services is an agricultural lab located in Southwestern Ontario that provides agricultural decision making services through strong partnerships and innovation. They are focused on providing cutting edge analysis so you can better manage your agricultural inputs. \n  \nWhen? SUMMARY:Nitrogen Management Strategies to Increase Nitrogen Availability in Crops
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin a virtual event with Craig Drury\, from  Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada at the Harrow Research & Development Centre presenting on nitrogen management strategies to increase nitrogen availability to crops. \nWhen nitrogen fertilizer is added to soils\, it undergoes enzymatic and microbial reactions and some of these processes can result in losses of a very expensive fertilizer input. This presentation will provide examples of different approaches that could be used to help your farm operation reduce these losses and increase the amount of nitrogen available to your crops.  Field trials conducted over the last 12 years have examined different nitrogen fertilizer sources (including inhibitors)\, application methods (broadcast\, broadcast & incorporated\, or injection)\, timing (planting\, side-dress\, late application) and fertilizer rates. A recent study has also looked at some of these nitrogen management practices when cover crops are present.  Results from these field studies as well as those from the 2024 living lab trials will be presented and discussed. \nWhen? Tuesday June 23\, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm \nREGISTER HERE! \nNitrogen Management Strategies to Increase Nitrogen Availability in Crops is an OSCIA-recognized Knowledge Sharing Event (KSE) for farmers with On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) projects in the Nitrogen Management category.

SUMMARY:Eastern Ontario Crop Conference (EOCC): Nitrogen Management
DESCRIPTION:Two KSEs are available at this year’s Eastern Ontario Crop Conference (EOCC):\n#47 Navigating Nitrogen \nA roundup of the latest research in eastern Ontario focused on improving nitrogen fertilizer in corn. \n#56 The Value of Manure – Managing Dairy Manure for Increased Soil Health and Forage Production Sustainability \nManure is a valuable source of crop-essential nutrients that\, when managed carefully\, can help build soil organic matter\, enhance nutrient cycling\, and improve overall soil health and climate resilience over time. In 2022\, a statewide on-farm research project was initiated in New York State to quantify the nitrogen (N) replacement value\, corn silage or grain yield\, and soil health enhancements of various manure sources. Between 2022 and 2023\, eleven on-farm field trials were implemented. Yield data are being used to quantify differences in most economic N rate between manured and non-manured strips\, and to quantify the yield impact of the manure applications. In 2024\, eight additional trials were added using various manure sources. Results so far indicate that manure can offset N fertilizer needs and increase corn silage yield beyond its nutrient contributions\, but impacts are field-specific\, reflecting differences in field histories and growing conditions. Assessments of soil microbial biomass for sites in 2023 and 2024 reflected the manure history for trial locations and suggest that mid-season assessments may help identify where nitrogen fertilizer addition is beneficial for the crop and where not. Assessment of variability of different manure sources point to the importance of manure sampling and analyses. Preliminary results will be shared. \nWhen? January 21st\, 2025 \n Time?  TBD \nWhere? Kemptville Campus\, Parish Hall (40 Campus Drive\, Kemptville\, ON) \nAttendees will need to purchase a ticket to the Eastern Ontario Crop Conference to attend this event. \nRegistration: Visit EOCC \nNavigating Nitrogen and The Value of Manure – Managing Dairy Manure for Increased Soil Health and Forage Production Sustainability is an OSCIA recognized Knowledge Sharing Event (KSE) for farmers with On-Farm Climate Action Fund (OFCAF) projects in the Nitrogen Management category.
