SUMMARY:Ontario Soil Network Road Trip Day 4 - Middlesex County
DESCRIPTION:STOP 1: \nIn 2021\, the UTRCA established a 58 acre demonstration farm near Thorndale\, Ontario. The farm is used to research and demonstrate a number of agricultural best management practices (BMPs)\, including cover cropping\, and showcase how they can improve and protect soil health and water quality while maintaining productivity in the southern Ontario landscape. The farm exhibits a suite of BMPs\, offering multiple opportunities to reduce nutrient and sediment loss at the field scale. \nThe highlight feature of the farm is the contoured controlled drainage system which utilizes a series of Agri-Drain control structures to manage sub-surface drainage across 14 acres of the field\, which can be compared to the conventional tile system covering the remainder of the farm. \nSTOP 2: \nDanny Jefferies is the Agronomy Lead at Honeyland Ag Services\, he oversee a diverse range of agronomic and research-focused initiatives to support customer success and drive innovation in nutrient management. DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin a virtual event with Craig Drury\, from  Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada at the Harrow Research & Development Centre presenting on nitrogen management strategies to increase nitrogen availability to crops. \nWhen nitrogen fertilizer is added to soils\, it undergoes enzymatic and microbial reactions and some of these processes can result in losses of a very expensive fertilizer input. This presentation will provide examples of different approaches that could be used to help your farm operation reduce these losses and increase the amount of nitrogen available to your crops.  Field trials conducted over the last 12 years have examined different nitrogen fertilizer sources (including inhibitors)\, application methods (broadcast\, broadcast & incorporated\, or injection)\, timing (planting\, side-dress\, late application) and fertilizer rates. A recent study has also looked at some of these nitrogen management practices when cover crops are present.  Results from these field studies as well as those from the 2024 living lab trials will be presented and discussed. \nWhen? DESCRIPTION:Taking soil tests both for nutrients and biology are important management techniques so that ecological farmers can increase yields\, improve crop quality\, reduce weed problems and improve soil health. In Part 2 of this free Member Month webinar\, Ken Laing will discuss what amendments and cover crops you might use to correct deficiencies you find from your soil testing. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKen Laing of Orchard Hill Farm has farmed with his wife Martha near St.Thomas since 1979 when he graduated from the University of Guelph with a B.Sc. in Agriculture. From 1979 until 1996 they produced pick-your-own fruit\, and they transitioned to organic in 1989. From 1997 until 2017 they operated a CSA for up to 250 members. Pasture has been a part of their farm rotation for 44 years in terms of draft horses and more recently since 2015 also with cattle and custom grazing.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen? DESCRIPTION:March Manure Mondays 2025 Poster\n\n\n\nMARCH MANURE MONDAYS 2025 from 2pm-3pm (ET) \nMarch 10th – Fine-tuning Manure Nutrient Availability\nManure application can reduce fertilizer needs\, improve soil health and increase yields. Kirsten Workman and Quirine Ketterings (Cornell\, NY) will provide an overview of manure research that helped quantify the nitrogen replacement value from manure to determine MERN (most economic rate of N) as well as the impacts to microbial biomass for sites with and without manure. \nMarch 17th – In-crop application using 360 Rain to improve 4R practices\nHandling the dilute liquids that remain after solids separation is expensive and time consuming. Scott Shearer (Ohio State U) will discuss the opportunities of new technology like 360 Rain for in-crop application of manure liquids for improved 4R nutrient management\, water management yields in a value-enhanced circular economy. \nMarch 31st Application strategies to maximize N and reduce GHG losses in the field.\nNitrogen inhibitors help reduce N loss and nitrous oxide emissions for fertilizer\, but what about manure? Heather Darby (U of Vermont) and Debbie Aller will evaluate research results that compare application timing\, injection vs surface application\, use of biochar and other technologies that can reduce emissions. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhere?
