On April 20th and 21st, BSCIA hosted a Soil and Crop display at Roots of Bruce. This is an agriculture educational day for local schools, with 2023 being the 26th year for this event. The kids had good questions and enjoyed learning about the different cropping practices used in Bruce County. I would like to thank Andy Dales, Derek Dupuis, Paul Legge, and Blair Scott for volunteering at the display, and to Huron Tractor – Walkerton for supplying the combine for our demonstrations. I would also like to thank the Grain Farmers of Ontario and Doug Wagter for running a display on cover crops and some uses of corn, soybeans, and winter wheat. All in all, a great success.

We are looking for a few member volunteers to assist with a couple of events, our summer mystery car tour, and the Ontario Forage Expo, see notes below.

Our next planned event is our summer mystery car tour, to be held on Tuesday, July 4th. This is a fun event, where we peruse crop issues in Bruce County fields and try to stump the agronomist we invite to play “expert”. Stay tuned for updates, as we pick the fields and finalize the location closer to the date. If you would like to volunteer, you can contact myself at jz@fieldwalker.ca and I can forward you to the appropriate committee member. We are typically looking for issue fields the week before our date.

Later in the same week, our 2nd planned event is the Ontario Forage Expo, to be held on Thursday July 6th at Barry Ribey’s farm. This will involve the demonstration of forage equipment along with forage related exhibitors. If you would like to exhibit at this event, please contact the Ontario Forage Council: 877-892-8663. If you would like to volunteer at the Forage Expo as a parking helper for a few hours in the morning from 9:30 to 11, please contact Harrison Todd at harrison.todd@rbc.com or by phone at 226-668-6476.

Sincerely.

Jonathan Zettler, President, Bruce SCIA.
