An innovative approach to agri-tourism and soil sustainability
By Tracy Myers, Eastern Valley Regional Communication Coordinator
Community, agriculture, and sustainability are three words that aptly describe Jakob and Stephanie Vogel’s core values. Born and raised in the heart of Glengarry county’s agricultural community, both Jakob and Stephanie knew that the industry would always be in their blood. After marrying and purchasing a farm in Monkland, they set their sights on creating a unique venture that would aptly reflect their core values. Hence, Fields of Gold was born! The idea began during COVID-19 in the summer of 2020 and came to fruition after approximately ten months. In July of 2021 the grand opening took place, and the community was excited!

Vibrant sunflowers graced twenty acres of the farm with walkways present for people to use while enjoying the beauty of approximately one million plants. Fresh-cut flowers (picked daily of course) are available for purchase at the Bloom Bar, Rosie (pictured below). A family favourite is the opportunity to explore the trails throughout the farm, where there are many opportunities to have photos taken. During the 2022 season new attractions included an area where people could pick their own cut flowers, which included marigolds, sweet peas, and gladiolas. And a small corn maze was added along with a pumpkin patch that included various varieties of pumpkins, large and small.

Rounding off the year was the Family Farm Festival which included face painting, pick your own pumpkins, and a vendors’ market.
Jakob’s background as a dairy nutritionist and Stephanie’s role as a teacher have taught them the importance of perseverance. They understand the significance of soil conservation and how sunflowers help with this. The long tap roots of sunflowers aid in softening and breaking the ground, while the flowers attract bees, pollinators, and other beneficial insects. Sunflowers are also a great additive to livestock mixes and additionally are beneficial to wildlife, such as providing more shelter for deer. The harvested seeds are also excellent additions to bird seed or snacks for lunches.
