Where has the time gone? Once again, the growing season has blown by, and we are in corn harvest again. In our area like many others, it’s been a damp corn harvest season with moistures remaining higher than we would like. On the plus side, yields have been strong, and quality has also been very good. To date our own corn has all been grade 1 and 2. Hopefully that trend continues as we finish the season. Corn silage and soybean harvest were both the complete opposite harvest to corn; we had great weather through them and made great timing. Unlike the corn where moisture has been an issue our beans were dryer than preferred due to the prolonged dry weather and sunshine. Soybean yields were strong due to some timely rains, but we had a very dry finish which cost us our top end yield. Corn silage for us was a little shorter than usual, but tested very well and should make for some great feed this coming year.

This coming weekend it appears we may get our first shot of winter which had to come at some point, ready or not!

As we wrap up the field work season mark your calendars for our upcoming AGM planned for January 15th, as well as Grey Bruce Farmers Week running January 7-12. Both of these are sure to be great days of learning, visiting and of course, great meals! I hope to see you all there!

That’s all for now, till next time,

Thomas Farrell

Bruce County SCIA President
